Hatong, or pigeon flutes, are a common sound in Indonesia (turn on your speakers and hit F5 or click here to hear the sound again). The hatong are attached to the main tail feathers of the pigeons, which are then released to fly home. The sound of the flutes is believed to appease the gods. (In the movie ‘The Lost Horizon’ a woman in the monastery is shown how to attach the flutes.)

Hatong have been successfully attached to kites by various kiters. Preferably the hatong are attached along the leading edge of the kite. Aeoliast Uli Wahl glues small magnets to the base of the hatong, so he can stick them on any part of the kite without damaging it.
